Boundaries are expectations and needs that help you feel safe and comfortable in your relationships. Expectations in relationships help you stay mentally and emotionally well. Learning when to say no and when to say yes is also an essential part of feeling comfortable when interacting with others.
Remember this, people treat you according to your boundaries.
During these 9 years of work, I have had various experiences with people of all kinds. But there was always a constant that I noticed in my colleagues, something that turned them off as soon as they crossed the threshold of stamping.
Over time I revealed that mysterious feeling that animated them.
What it was?? Well I would say that they had surrendered to their daily routine immediately, anxiously accepting the pay day, with the hope of better days that vanish day after day; I was dragging myself to their peak with my nerves already tense, carrying the burdens of economic, personal, and ultimately work problems.
But reflecting well, the real problem was that over the years they have not established the stakes to be able to live this custom in a harmonious way.
I am guilty of it too, I have brought the stress of work into my home, making my partner, friends and colleagues suffer it. Without taking responsibility for my actions, always blaming someone else.
But one day I made up my mind and revisited all the behaviors, actions, statements, etc.
I realized that I was the problem, my lack of discipline and stakes dragged me into a limbo of anguish and mental and physical illness.
So this how to describe you have some boundary issues at work:
- Doing work for others.
- Being asked about personal issues.
- Taking on more than you can handle.
- Not delegating.
- Flirting.
- working without pay.
- Not taking advantage of vacation days.
- Saying yes to tasks you can't responsibly complete.
- Engaging in stressful interactions.
- Working during downtime.
- Doing jobs intended for more than one person.
- Not taking needed time off.
Boundaries are not common sense; they're taught. In the workplace, they're passed down by the HR department, the work culture, and the bosses. When people are in fear of losing their jobs, however,it's hard to implement boundaries.
"Even if your boundaries are dismissed because of ( the culture ), it doesn't mean they aren't relevant and vital. It might mean that you need to tell others in the company, seek support outside the organization, or get legal advice. It isn't okay to feel like your job will be in jeopardy if you don't comply with toxic workplace behavior."
In her book, the doctor mentioned behavior that I have seen over the years here in Italy in any work environment, especially as regards us young people who enter the world of work.
she said: " I've observed people doing the work of two people, not leaving work on time, working after hours ( evening and weekends), not using allocated vacation time, and volunteering for project they don't have time to do. They do this all in the name of being a ( good employee ).
- Identify the areas where boundaries are needed. You can uncover these by tuning in to your feelings. What's causing you to stay later? what about your job leads you to feel overwhelmed or burned out?
- if it's possible, do your work only at work/ only during works hours.
- Give yourself permission to have boundaries at work.
- Don't let issues go too far before you decide to set boundaries. Start setting them right at the honest of possible issues.
- Teach others how to respect your boundaries by being consistent with respecting them yourself. If you choose to declare your expectations, be clear and up front.

Setting boundaries is like showing your passport. In our world today people respect the passport especially because of the values of the country that has delivered it. So setting your boundaries is like setting your values your principles that will turn you the person a respectable person.

ReplyDeleteBoundaries are vital in life as we get to protect our journey and show ourselves and others respect. It’s also interesting to see who reacts negatively to our boundaries as this shows if a relationship is something that adds value (and vice versa) to our emotional health. This was a really interesting read — thank you for sharing!
